I don’t remember who posted this a few days ago, but this is a really good read. I haven’t been to northern Italy since 2006, but even then there were Liga Nord and swastika graffiti everywhere - I can’t even imagine how it must be now. I mean this is the place where, probably about a month in to my study abroad trip in Verona, we were out at our favorite bar and we met our first friendly Italians. We were having a really good time, and then some youngish northern Italian dude with a sweater tied around his shoulders felt the need to pull my friend aside and tell her that ‘those men’ we were sitting with were….Sardinian! The horror! and he looked at her like he expected her to rampage about the place and start berating the nice Sardinians for having the nerve to exist. She just looked at him like he was crazy and said, “yes I know, they told us…” “You know they are ALL criminals, right? You shouldn’t trust them. Don’t be alone with them.” So yeah, I am not at all surprised that a sizable contingent of northern Italians have channeled their bizarre xenophobic tendencies into a virulent racism against people who don’t look like their goddamn grandfathers.

Some medieval decorators were born with a pen in their hand, others never got it right. Thumbing through the medieval book you encounter places like this: an empty page used by scribes or decorators for practicing their skills. I feel sorry for this guy, who tried to make a flowery letter D but ended up with oddly-shaped, deformed creations - including, at the bottom, a human brain. However, I also admire his zest and perseverance: an artist with pluck, albeit without skills.

If grandmothers around the world had a rallying cry, it would probably sound something like “You need to eat!”

Photographer Gabriele Galimberti’s grandmother said something similar to him before one of his many globetrotting work trips. To ensure he had at least one good meal, she prepared for him a dish of ravioli before he departed on one of his adventures.

“In that occasion I said to my grandma ‘You know, Grandma, there are many other grandmas around the world and most of them are really good cooks,” Galimberti wrote via email. “I’m going to meet them and ask them to cook for me so I can show you that you don’t have to be worried for me and the food that I will eat!’ This is the way my project was born!”

The project, “Delicatessen With Love”, took Galimberti to 58 countries where he photographed grandmothers with both the ingredients and finished signature dishes.

Galimberti said many of the subjects for the project were selected serendipitously, picked while he was working on a project about couch surfing that explored the global phenomenon of staying in other people’s houses. Since Galimberti never slept in hotels while working on the project, he was able to come into contact with people who introduced him to grandmothers in the area.

Galimberti acted as photographer and stylist during each shoot with the grandmothers, taking a portrait of both the women and the food they made for him.

Fifi Makhmer, 62, Cairo, Egypt. Kuoshry (pasta, rice and legumes pie).

Isolina Perez De Vargas, 83, Mendoza, Argentina. Asado criollo (mixed meats barbecue).

Bisrat Melake, 60, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Enjera with curry and vegetables.

[ I was going to post a long rant about some arrogant white yoga girl who insist people are ignorant for using olive oil to cook and should not eat fish or drink milk or eat cheese because of all sorts of problematic food issues, instead I said, let me focus on those who celebrate food. My grandmother mixed three bean salad from a can, spread pimento cheese on white bread, and sectioned grapefruits with a special grapefruit segmenting knife. And she popped butter-flavored microwave popcorn to serve the dog during the stock market wrap at 4pm every day.
